About the Tour

During its last three decades of touring, the Ithaca College Choir has performed in Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully and Avery Fisher Halls, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the University of Limerick’s Irish World Music Centre. Last week the choir—along with faculty soloists from the Ithaca College School of Music and accompanied by a student-faculty chamber orchestra— added the Music Center at Strathmore and the Church of the Holy Trinity to its list of foremost touring venues with a performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

“Bach’s Mass in B Minor is one of the monumental works in music history for choral musicians, instrumental musicians, and soloists alike,” said Lawrence Doebler, professor and director of the music school’s choral activities. “The work is a very difficult and complex work in both its size and scope. It’s a tribute to the Ithaca College School of Music that we have such a high caliber of student and faculty musicians capable of providing this extraordinary performance opportunity.”

In addition to seven faculty vocal soloists—sopranos Carol McAmis, Deborah Montgomery-Cove, and Patrice Pastore; mezzo-soprano Jennifer Kay; tenor David Parks; and baritones Randie Blooding and Brad Hougham—the choir will be accompanied by the 29-member chamber orchestra composed of students, faculty and guest artists. This collaboration of student and faculty musicians creates a unique learning opportunity for students.

Under Doebler’s 33 years of leadership, the Ithaca College Choir has toured extensively throughout the eastern, southern and Midwestern United States, as well as venues in Europe. In addition to its appearances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the choir has performed at the American Choral Directors Association in Providence, the Music Educators National Conference in Baltimore and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

As director of the music school’s choral activities, Doebler has also conducted the Ithaca College Choral Union and Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Verdi’s Requiem performed at Avery Fisher Hall with soprano Sharon Sweet (MM ‘78), mezzo-soprano Leah Summers, tenor David Parks, and baritone Randie Blooding.
