Want to write magazine articles that can give you published writing samples and your name on an editorial masthead? Want to publish your photographs and your page designs, or apply your knowledge of marketing and business to help launch a new product? Then apply to take the new (IC)2 course Social Entrepreneurship in Action: Creating a Green Living Magazine for Tompkins County. This 300-level course is being offered for 4 credits on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:50 to 8:50 p.m., and it’s being taught by Tommy Dunne, who’s got more than 20 years of magazine experience at such titles as Details, People, Glamour, and Seventeen; and Nick Kowalczyk, who teaches magazine writing. Students will learn the magazine industry from both business and editorial perspectives. With our guidance, as well as the expertise of guest professors from Ithaca College and professionals from the publishing world, students will help us develop a business plan and editorial mock-up, then collaborate to create, market, and distribute the first issue of a new “green living” lifestyle magazine targeted specifically to Tompkins County residents. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience! We’ll need writers, designers, photographers, illustrators, managers, business analysts, market researchers, and more to put together this publication. So we’re looking for a truly interdisciplinary group of students from a variety of majors and schools—writing, journalism, photography, environmental studies and sciences, culture and communication, business, as well as HSHP students interested in health, nutrition, or fitness. But we also will consider upperclassmen from any discipline, as well as exceptional sophomores. Want in? Enrollment, limited to 18, is by application. Download it (and learn more about the course) at https://faculty.ithaca.edu/nkowalczyk/docs/. If you have questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Professor Kowalczyk (274-5146; nkowalczyk@ithaca.edu) or Professor Dunne (274-1039; tdunne@ithaca.edu). |
