MLK Week 2011 Academic Presentations Solicited - Addressing the Fierce Urgency of NowContributed by Doreen Hettich-Atkins on 11/01/10 The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday will be celebrated in 2011 during the first week of classes, January 24-29, 2011 (as the Federal holiday falls this year prior to the return of students).
This year's theme was selected from the following quote: “We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood -- it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, ‘Too late.’" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Beyond Vietnam -- A Time to Break Silence Delivered 4 April 1967, at a meeting of Clergy and Laity Concerned at Riverside Church in New York City All academic presentations will be held on Tuesday, January 25 or Thursday, January 27 between 12:15 and 1:00 pm.
