As many of you know, the IC/Community Workgroup was formed a number of years ago to improve the relationship between the College community and our neighbors on South Hill. The Workgroup has been successful at addressing issues of concern for our neighbors related to student behavior off-campus (i.e. problem properties, violations of the City and Town noise ordinances, etc.). We also coordinate the South Hill Welcome Back Brunch each September and initiated the College’s last day of class celebration (IC Kicks Back) at the end of each Spring Semester. This past Fall, the Workgroup, at the request of the South Hill community, began following up with Ithaca College students who have received a ticket from the Ithaca Police Department (IPD) and/or the Sheriff’s Office for any violation of local ordinances or laws off-campus. If a student is ticketed, the IPD/Sheriff informs the College of the incident. The student will then receive a letter from me, the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Life, to remind him/her of their responsibility to comply with all local laws and ordinances and encourage the student to avoid behaviors in the future which could result in more severe consequences and/or fines. This is not an Ithaca College Judicial Affairs action, but simply an administrative follow-up with the student. If a student is issued a second ticket by IPD or the Sheriff, the student will be required to meet with a Student Affairs and Campus Life staff member to talk about the incidents and review strategies for avoiding further problems and sanctions. Our goal is to promote a safe and positive living community on South Hill. Please help us achieve that goal by respecting the rights of your fellow students and our neighbors. Have a great Spring Semester! |
