Tioga Transit Commuter Pilot Program Seeks Interested IC Community ParticipantsContributed by Marian Brown on 02/16/11
The College will pilot support for our employees interested in riding to work each day on Tioga transit routes by providing them with a free unlimited ride monthly pass for each of the months of March, April and May 2011. Because there is a substantial upfront cost to the College associated with providing out-of-Tioga county unlimited ride passes during this pilot period, this commuter support program is intended to meet the needs of those College employees who would plan to regularly use the transit service to travel to/from work. Please review carefully the service hours of those “Ride Tioga” transit routes into Ithaca to ensure that this service would effectively meet your needs in terms of your arrival and departure from work. To learn more about "Ride Tioga" service routes and schedules, visit Tioga County Area Transit System. This commuter support pilot will run from March 1 through May 31, and be constantly monitored in terms of interest and participation. If you are interested in participating in this Tioga transit commuting pilot, please contact Marian Brown at mbrown@ithaca.edu or 274-3787 NO LATER THAN NOON ON MONDAY, February 21st so we can order your first month’s unlimited ride pass and receive it here in time for the start of the March 1 pilot transit ridership period. I am a long-time daily bus commuter from Chemung County. I would be happy to speak with anyone curious or concerned about the logistics of daily bus commuting and pleased if the College would like to cover my pass, too. The $60 pass I pay for each month covers itself within the first week as cash fare is $5 each way (Still less than gasoline, no?). I reduce my carbon footprint by traveling with a lot of folks headed in the same direction (many at Cornell), i never lose time looking for parking, and the timeschedule is quite reliable. As many of you know, the cost of rent within Tompkins County can be too high a percentage of the paycheck, so this is a workable alternative.
