Ithaca College

Dr. Peter G. Brown, a Professor in the McGill University School of Environment in Montreal, will deliver a public talk at 4:00PM on Wednesday, February 23rd in Room 111 in the Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise at Ithaca College. In his thought-provoking presentation, “Will Sustainability Elude Us? An Ethical Critique”, Dr. Brown will explore whether - given the current state of American cultural structures and what is taught in institutions of higher education - sustainability is achievable.  This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Brown is involved in tree farming and conservation efforts in Maryland, Maine, and Quebec. He is a Certified Quebec Forest Producer.  He was named “Tree Farmer of the Year” in Garrett County, Maryland; and has served as the “Steward” of Walker Pond in Hancock County, Maine. At the appointment of the Governor of Maryland he served as the first Chair of the Rural Legacy Advisory Committee. He co-founded the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.  With Colin Scott, the Cree Nation of Wemindji, and many colleagues he has helped plan for a culturally appropriate biodiversity preserve of over 4000 sq. km. in the James Bay region of Quebec.  An adjacent Marine Protected Area is being proposed. 

 Dr. Brown has served as a consultant/advisor to numerous organizations, including the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, the Canadian Ministry of Environment, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. 

Professor Brown is the author of Restoring the Public Trust: A Fresh Vision for Progressive Government in America and The Commonwealth of Life: Economics for a Flourishing Earth.  He is also a co-author of a book on a new vision of macro-economics titled Right Relationship: Building a Whole Earth Economy. With Jeremy Schmidt, he co-edited and authored sections of his newest work: Water Ethics.
