Professor David Turkon to speak about HIV/AIDS at the next Food for Thought MeetingContributed by Colleen Wormsley on 02/17/11 David Turkon, Associate Professor for the Department of Anthropology will speak at the next Food for Thought meeting on Monday February 21, 2011 at 7 p.m. in Friends 203. Turkon has participated in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research project with Catholic Relief Services, Lesotho and the University of South Florida Department of Anthropology. The project explored the impact of HIV/AIDS in rural Lesotho, with the goal of establishing culturally specific intervention aimed at improving livelihoods through introduction of homestead gardenign and conservation agriculture. A primary focus is to empower people to take control over their own lives in order to reduce motivations for engaging in behaviors that increase the risk of contracting HIV. Food for Thought is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world who are suffering from malnutrition, poverty, and lack of education. Food for Thought meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. in Friends 203. New members are always welcome.
