May Session, May 16 - May 27, 2011
3 credits
LA SS TE

Critical Health Issues (HLTH 20500) introduces students to health issues and health policies in the U.S. This liberal arts course explores the vast enterprise that includes all sectors of government and industry, affecting everyone’s life and health.

  • What is all the fuss about health care reform?
  • How is health care organized in the U.S.? Who pays for it? How much does it cost?
  • What are the factors that influence our health? Genetics, work, neighborhoods, race, income, housing? All of these?
  • Can we do a better job at providing health care to the most needy? How?
  • What are the current major issues in health care? Heart disease, HIV/AIDS, our food supply, others?

This interdisciplinary course looks at the many facets that make up our health system from public heath and prenatal care, to the ethics and economics of end-of-life issues. The class will have a chance to discuss current arguments and perspectives regarding health policies that affect us all.
