Save your noon hour on March 22 to attend a presentation by predoctoral diversity fellow, Donathan Brown, from the Department of Communication Studies.  The presentation will be held in Clark Lounge from 12:10 - 1:10 p.m.

Having recently defended his dissertation, Dr. Brown will elaborate on several themes in the work.  He will explain how movements, both past and present, aimed at defining immigration as a multi-tiered policy problem, without fail, have articulated English-only legislation as part of the solution.  The talk will emphasize the current multi-level legislative movement toward a national/official language. With new policy actors, redefined arguments, and shifting political and demographic tides, this movement continues to intensify nationwide.
Apparent within this debate are questions of national identity, degrees of a "paranoid style," and other racial and cultural variables.

The aim of the March 22 discussion will be to explain how specific beliefs influence and ultimately guide both the spirit of these debates and the policies they produce.
