Joanne Hindman, a 17-year veteran in the Office of Marketing Communications, will be leaving her position as Associate Director of Web Content Strategy. Her last day will be April 14. We are working on arrangements to allow her to continue to work with us on a number of critical projects in a part-time capacity for a period after that.

During her tenure at Ithaca College, Joanne has been a key player in the evolution of our marketing and recruitment efforts. As the office evolved from a more traditional publications-focused charge, Joanne was instrumental in helping to establish how we use the Web as a tool for communication and promotion -- from the earliest incarnations of the Campus-Wide Information Systems (CWIS) group, all the way up through what we consider the Web Team today.

Among her long list of contributions are fundamental services we rely on every day, including the creation and continuing development of Intercom to serve as a vital communications vehicle for the campus community; development and guiding direction for Web Profile Manager; and leading our office’s efforts on the significant shift of the Web Infrastructure and Branding Initiative (WIBI), which positioned the College to fully leverage the benefits of broadly distributed content management across campus while maintaining a visual brand, messaging, and user experience consistency that was centrally managed.   Joanne and her team were responsible for helping IC enter the wild world of social media, and under her leadership, the College received accolades for presenting a voice that was fresh yet consistent with the dignity of the College as an institution of higher learning.

One of Joanne’s greatest contributions has been her key role in helping to establish, foster, and maintain an excellent working relationship with Information Technology Services, which is rather unusual in higher education and has proven to give Ithaca a real advantage over many of our competitors. This partnership enabled us to have a prospective student portal as early as 2002, years before our competitors, as well as a deeply integrated Web site that fuses the power of excellent content and technology.

It is, in fact, Joanne’s unwavering insistence on ensuring the quality and integrity of content that has helped make her such a valued member of the Office of Marketing Communications team and the College community as a whole. Before there was such a thing as WIBI or Facebook, she took on the task of editing myriad College publications. Her work over the years encompassed the entire range of the Ithaca experience, from admission viewbooks to the undergraduate catalog (or is it catalogue?) to the Ithaca College Quarterly. As is so often the case with editors, that the final product of much of her work output went unnoticed and unremarked on is testament to the success of her efforts.

It has been Ithaca College’s great fortune that Joanne’s acceptance of a temporary position in 1994 in what was then the Office of College Relations has led to such a long and mutually rewarding relationship. Please take a moment to extend your best wishes to Joanne as she continues her professional and personal journey.
