Jay Sokolovsky, professor and chair of anthropology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, will visit Ithaca College on Thursday, April 14, to give a talk "Will We Grow Up Before We Grow Old: What America Can Learn from the Global Response to the Age of Aging" The talk which is free and open to the public will begin at 7 p.m. in Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall.

A specialist in cross-cultural, comparative gerontology, Sokolovsky has studied aging in numerous cultures and locations, including a peasant village in Mexico; New York's inner-city; Tampa, Florida; Columbia, Maryland; and urban neighborhoods in Croatia and England. His books include "The Cultural Context of Aging," "Growing Old in Different Societies" and "Old Men of the Bowery."  His most recent work documents the role of older adults in New York City's community garden movement.  He has produced an ethnographic video "Urban Garden:Fighting for Life and Beauty"
