On March 31, 2011 Assistant Professor of History Pearl Ponce participated in a panel discussion at the History Center in Ithaca.

The panel, entitled "The Meaning of the American Civil War" was held to mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war.

This year America commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Across the North and South, flag-raisings, stirring speeches, dramatic reenactments, and even secessionist galas have marked the occasion. Locally, Tompkins County established a Civil War commemoration commission to plan and coordinate local events around the anniversary. What do these events mean? What explains Americans’ enduring fascination with the War? How do society and politics shape our understanding of the event? On March 31, at 5:30 p.m, the History Center will investigate the meaning of the Civil War through the stories of a Civil War scholar and those who commemorate the sacrifice of Union war veterans. Pearl Ponce, professor of History at Ithaca College, and Danny Wheeler, Past Commander in chief Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will facilitate a discussion of the meaning of the War.
