Izzy Award Winners Monday, 7:30 p.m., Emerson SuitesContributed by Maura Stephens on 04/07/11
This is a great opportunity for students and community members to hear from two stellar independent journalists in a free and open forum. A longtime path-breaking journalist for both mainstream and independent outlets, Robert Scheer recently published his sixth book, The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street while Mugging Main Street. Izzy Award judges described him as “a beacon of journalistic independence who exposes both major parties on issues foreign and domestic, while giving voice to the disenfranchised.” City Limits is an independent investigative magazine and news site that focuses on communities and issues neglected by mainstream media. The Izzy Award judges called its output “a model of in-depth urban journalism that examines systemic problems, challenges assumptions, and points toward solutions.” The previous winners of the Izzy Award, named for legendary muckracking journalist I. F. "Izzy" Stone and bestowed by the Park Center for Independent Media, are investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill, blogger Glenn Greenwald, and Democracy Now! host/executive producer Amy Goodman.
