Ithaca College Theatre will present the Tony Award–nominated musical “Baby” with music by David Shire, lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr., and book by Sybille Pearson, based on a story developed with Susan Yankowitz. Lee Byron, chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, will direct the production. Performance times are 8 p.m. April 19, 21-23, and 26-30; with 2 p.m. matinees offered on Apr. 24 and 30. All performances will be held in the Clark Theatre in Dillingham Center.

“Baby” takes place in a college town and follows three couples as they deal with the painful, gratifying and agonizingly funny aftermath of conceiving a baby. There’s the college couple, just barely beginning their adult lives; the 30-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, who were looking forward to seeing their youngest child graduate from high school when a rare night of passion leads to a big surprise. With couples from different ages and backgrounds, everyone can relate to their stories. Byron states “The show goes on a journey with every couple”. Those journeys are full of music, heartbreak, laughter and love.

David Shire, composer of the Broadway musicals “Big” and “Saturday Night Fever,” brings a fun, touching and catchy score to “Baby.” Featuring songs that will make audiences laugh and cry, “Baby” is sure to be a memorable theatrical experience for couples and people of all ages.

The cast of “Baby” includes Emma Poole ’11 as Lizzie, Steve Moore ’11 as Danny, Meg Schneider ’11 as Pam, Ryan MacConnell ’13 as Nick, Amber Wood ’11 as Arlene, and Tim Quartier ’11 as Alan.

The music director and conductor is faculty member Joel Gelpe; the choreographer is associate professor of theater arts Mary Corsaro. The design team includes scenic designer Kathryn Vega ’11, costume designer Grace O’Malley ’12, lighting designer Drew Winston ’11 and sound designer Rachel Spear ’11. The show’s technical director is Adam Farber ’11, and the production stage manager is Lindsay Ricketts ’11. Rebekah Weagraff ’11 is the dramaturg.
