The State of New York prohibits smoking in the public areas of all buildings. As such Ithaca College has an established smoking policy (2.8.10) that directly addresses this for the campus community and provides a listing of the designated outdoor smoking areas. President Rochon has affirmed that we are all responsible for the enforcement of the college smoking policy and that we should respectfully request offenders to move to a designated smoking area. Many of us feel that this unfairly places the burden upon non-smokers. Despite my goal to be open and forthright, I often personally feel too awkward or intimidated to ask smokers to move. Staff Council encourages smoking responsibly by choosing a designated location and by encouraging fellow smokers to do the same. Please do the right thing for your co-workers. Asthma, a common ailment, is especially aggravated by second-hand smoke. My pregnant colleagues will also be appreciative! Thank you for responding. I have contacted Facilities and EH&S to request that the receptacles be removed from non-smoking areas.

are the ashtrays placed right next to said entrances? Even if I smoke 20ft away I
still have to come within inches of the entrances in order to responsibly dispose
of the cig butt. So in order to avoid littering I have to break rules? Catch 22,
folks.
