Anthropologist David Himmelgreen to present 'The Tourist Season Goes Down But Not the Prices: Globalization, Tourism, and Health in Rural Costa Rica'Contributed by Colleen Wormsley on 04/22/11
Although tourism brings jobs and infrastructure, it has also resulted in a significant increase in the cost of living along with a huge influx of visitors. These forces shape the local economy and social environment and have led to changes in diet, physical activity, and value system. These changes are likely affecting both the physical and mental health of those in Costa Rica. During this lecture, Himmelgreen will discuss potential strategies to increase sustainable food production while maintaining the benefits of a tourism-based economy. This event is sponsored by The Anthropology Department, Anthropology Club, Latin American Studies, and Food for Thought.
