Asma Barlas, director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, presented at a conference on Islamic NewThinking in Germany on June 28th.

The conference was organized by the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut of Essen and the University of Zurich in memory of the late Egyptian intellectual Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd. Barlas was one of two women invited to offer a commentary which she did under the title, "Anti-anti-foundationalism: Responding to Abu Zayd's Qur'anic hermeneutics."
