Apple just released its most recent operating system, OS X v10.7 Lion. Initial research by ITS indicates that this operating system will encounter problems with our current infrastructure.

With this latest OS release, Apple has discontinued the option of Rosetta mode, which certain of our applications require. Oracle Calendar client connectivity breaks and there are problems connecting to the Novell file system (Nova, Pulsar and Memphis).

So - what are the ramifications for the IC community?

  • Faculty and staff using existing Ithaca College Macintosh systems can continue working unaffected
  • Lab and eclassroom Macintoshs will continue to use Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) for this academic year.
  • We are not yet sure what the ramifications are for Macintoshs under the Technology Renewal program - more details to come
  • Anyone using a personal Mac computer running Mac OS X v10.7 Lion on campus (like incoming Freshman) more than likely will not be able to use Nova, Memphis or Pulsar.

ITS tries to ensure that college-owned systems provide full functionality. The removal of Rosetta mode is a major change by Apple that, in the short term, may affect our ability to provide this functionality. ITS will be working to understand and find solutions to these problems. Stay tuned for updates!
