At the recommendation of Faculty Council, an online plagiarism detection service called Turnitin is now available to faculty who wish to have students' papers analyzed for originality against a database of web pages, articles, and student papers. In addition to the OriginalityCheck feature, there is also GradeMark for paperless grading, and PeerMark for online peer review.

There are two ways to make it possible for students to submit their papers:

  1. Through Sakai Assignments tool
No additional account set up is needed for faculty or students. GradeMark and PeerMark are not available through Sakai.
  2. Directly through Turnitin.com
Faculty need to request an account through the online form on the Turnitin Plagiarism Detection site (see link below). They create their own Turnitin classes and assignments. They then distribute a class code that allows their students to set up a Turnitin.com account to submit their papers.

Note that while Turnitin can identify similar passages between a submitted paper and other sources, it does not indicate whether or not plagiarism has occurred.
