IIE, the Institute of International Education, sponsors a variety of scholarships for students planning a summer, semester or year abroad. Deadlines are rapidly approaching for the Spring 2012 and/or 2012-13 award cycle. BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP The Gilman Scholarship is open to undergraduate students who wish to study abroad. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and also aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad. To be eligible you must be receiving a Federal Pell grant. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000. Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad may then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. More information is available at www.iie.org/gilman. Spring 2012 deadline is October 4. FREEMAN-ASIA: AWARDS FOR STUDY IN ASIA Freeman-ASIA is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. The Freeman-Asia program is open students who wish to study in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. Awards are up to $5,000 for one semester. More information is available at http://www.iie.org/Programs/Freeman-ASIA. Spring 2012 deadline is October 12. Boren Scholarships provide up to $10,000 for one semester to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Boren awards promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion, and therefore study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study. For more information, go to http://www.borenawards.org/. Current award cycle is for the 2012-13 academic year; deadline for Fall 2012; Spring 2012, or full year 2012-13 awards is February 9, 2012.
