Several users have reported that Webmail is not working with Google Chrome after a recent Chrome update.

The college's Webmail vendor does not support Google Chrome and recommends the following browsers:

  • Windows - Firefox or Internet Explorer
  • Mac - Firefox or Safari

An "unsupported" browser doesn't always mean that an application won't work with it; it may simply mean the application hasn't been tested with a particular browser. In many cases, an application works well with, or only has some small bugs with, an unsupported browser. However, because Webmail is not supported using Chrome, it is unknown when or if the incompatibility will be resolved.

Is there a particular reason that a browser that 15% of people
that access the internet use is supported and safari which
about 5%(albeit possibly higher on this campus due to the
significant amount of Macs) use is supported? Is this a
company that services us in particular, colleges as a group,
or anybody that will pay them? Also is there anything that
anybody knows that might be the reason for the compatibility
error?

Actually, for much of the last three weeks, Webmail isn't working at all! It is painfully slow and it takes hours and hours in a single day to get things done.

Comon people, this isn't so hard to fix... It's not google chrome that won't work with the webmail, it's your stupid webmail system that won't work with chrome.

Moreover, please fix the mobile website. The mobile site does not work on any smartphones or i-stuff. Some iphones can access webmail through logging out of the mobile website and going through the real one, but this should be unneccesary, and still doesn't work for most phones.

Chrome is probably the most compliant browser there is, adhering to WC3 web
standards. When an application does not work properly it is the application that
need fixing. This is a media college, we should be able to work with the best
available tools.

ITS recognizes the importance of a robust, reliable email system and we are aware of the performance issues with our current system. And yes, with Chrome being the 4th most popular browser (12% "share" with regard to traffic to ithaca.edu sites according to our reports), we realize that incompatibility with Ithaca College systems is frustrating for users of that browser. We are investigating the lack of compatibility between Webmail and Chrome to see what we and/or our vendor may be able to do to resolve the problem. We are also actively exploring options for the future direction of our campus email environment. We appreciate the feedback.

Folks,

Webmail still isn't working properly with Firefox or, for that matter, with Thunderbird browers either. This is the third straight week! I didn't see you address this problem in your response.

It's not just webmail that has been unreliable this semester. My students and I have had numerous problems accessing campus email via Outlook and Thunderbird as well, which has been because of server problems. I frequently get an error message saying Thunderbird has timed out while trying to connect to the SMTP server (as I type this, in fact, I'm getting that message as I try to send a message).

I know I'm not alone in saying that email is an integral part of my courses, and it's incredibly frustrating to need to check or send email and not be able to do so.
