The Sustainability Café on Monday, October 17th will feature Michael Carey, speaking on “Saving Alaska's Wilderness: The Creation of the Arctic National Wildlife Range.”  Mr. Carey's appearance is part of the History Department's Perspectives on History Lecture series with Environmental Studies and Sciences as a co-sponsor. This Sustainability Café is also being held in conjunction with the Environmental Seminar. This talk will be held in Textor Hall Room 101 at 4:00PM (note room change from earlier post).

Michael Carey ‘67, an Ithaca College history grad, is a columnist for the Anchorage Daily News whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and many other major publications. In the 1950s and 1960s, conservationists, business leaders and political leaders - many of them Republicans - worked together to create one of America's great wilderness treasures, ANWR, in northeast Alaska. Today, the future of ANWR is fiercely debated as conservationists push for additional legislative protection from development - and the oil industry and their allies push for oil drilling. Carey has been a front-row witness to these ongoing debates.
