Neuroscientists have mapped out a system in the brain that mediates the mammalian response to surprising auditory stimuli.  Other brain areas modulate this system, either by increasing its sensitivity (as in conditions that produce fear) or by decreasing its sensitivity (e.g., when a soft sound precedes the startling stimulus).  My talk will describe these systems, along with a description of the role of specific neurotransmitters in their function.  In particular, I will focus on our recent studies examining the involvement of serotonin receptors in these processes in rats.
