The Alash ensemble is a quartet of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei) developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region.

Alash remains grounded in this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West.

Hosted by the Departments of Theater Arts and Anthropology with support from The School of Humanities and Sciences Educational Grant Initiative and the Diversity Awareness Committee, IC modern dancers will perform alongside Alash during a few songs. The performance will be held Tuesday October 11th at Dillingham Studio # 2 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Lindsay Gilmour at lgilmour@ithaca.edu or 607-274-1567. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.

All are welcome to join!

Tuvan throat singing is an utterly fascinating genre. You can see a video of the Alash ensemble performing at Grassroots a couple of years ago:
