Read what Jenny Barish ’14 gained from participating in Alternative Spring Break.

“I signed up for Alternative Spring Break because I wanted to get my hands dirty—but I ended up getting so much more. The Washington D.C. trip helped me grow personally and professionally. I got to work with different non-profit organizations, and began to see myself in D.C. as an employee of these amazing organizations. I also got the chance to do some heavy lifting as I worked on a garden in the area.

From this experience a wide array of career options opened up in front of my eyes, and better yet, I discovered that good people, honest work, and an open mind can make any experience a life changer.††I don’t want any of these experiences to be “alternative” for the rest of my life---I want service and education to remain a constant throughout.”

Alternative Spring Break is a program sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs that provides students service opportunities at a variety of sites across the United States.

This year, students will be able to volunteer in a variety of locations from March 10-March 18, 2011. Applications are open until October 31st and can be found here. For more information, visit the Alternative Spring Break website†or contact Don Austin at austin@ithaca.edu.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Donald Austin at austin@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
