The great pianist and composer Franz Liszt was born in October 1811, and the Ithaca College School of Music will wrap up its month-long celebration of his 200th birthday with two free events on Friday, October 28

·  At 7 p.m., alumnus lecturer Jeffery Engel will talk on “Liszt and Literature.”

·  At 8:15 p.m., faculty performers Charis Dimaras, Jennifer Hayghe, Brad Hougham, Deborah Montgomery-Cove, Elizabeth Simkin and Susan Waterbury will perform selected instrumental and vocal chamber works by Liszt.

Free and open to the public, both events will take place in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

“The Liszt Festival was organized not only in celebration of the great pianist’s 200th birthday but also to celebrate the compositions of one of the most misunderstood musicians in the history of Western music,” said Jennifer Hayghe, associate professor of music performance. “Titled ‘The Dualities of Liszt,’ the festival will explore the often conflicting ideas about Liszt’s personality and character, and show everyone there is so much more to Liszt than his reputation as the great virtuoso and pianistic idol of the 19th century.”
