Théâtre de la Chandelle Verte presents La Farce de Maître Pathelin, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. in Emerson Suites

The French Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures welcomes the French-language theater company Théâtre de la Chandelle Verte for a performance of the medieval comedy, La Farce de Maître Pathelin.  

Set in 15th-century France, this medieval farce plays as surprisingly modern as it follows the schemes of Pierre Pathelin, a country lawyer getting squeezed out of business by an emerging “professional” class of trained clerks and lawyers.  Needing fabric for his wife’s dresses, Pathelin borrows more than he can possibly repay and spends most of the play hiding from his creditors.  Forced out of seclusion by taking on a new client to help pay the bills, Pathelin finds himself in court arguing a case against the very men from whom he has been hiding.  Farcical hijinks ensue…

Performed in French, but open to all interested.  Free admission.
