Visiting Fulbright scholar from Sri Lanka to discuss cyberspace as an emerging site for the expansion of global, social, and political processes; 7 pm, Thursday, 11/03, Clark Lounge

Please join us in welcoming Dr.  Harinda Vidanage from Sri Lanka, who will participate in the International Scholarly Conversation Series sponsored by the International Club and the Honors Program.  His talk “Ghost in the Shell: From Cyber Liberation to Entrapment “  will be at 7 pm on Thursday, November 3, in Clark Lounge.  This lecture will explore cyberspace as an emerging site for the expansion of global, social, and political processes, including such phenomena as the digital Zapatista in the early 90s, as well as contemporary Kurdish, Haitian, Sri Lankan diaspora movements online. Cyber liberation literature will be juxtaposed with the emerging realities of the post 9/11 world where cyber space is viewed within the national security agenda and thus approached as a space for militarization.

This event is part of International Education Week.

A discussion will follow the presentation.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Vidanage is a political scientist by training and has completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests and publications have primarily been on politics of cyberspace, diaspora political engagements, and political activism using new media and cyber terrorism. He is also a political analyst on global political developments and their implications for Sri Lanka. Dr. Vidanage’s recent scholarly interests have been in the effect of visual politics on international relations. He is currently a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.

This event is free and open to the public. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the International Club at icic@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
