Mandatory Computer Changes - Coming Soon to Your Desktop or Laptop!Contributed by Beth Rugg on 10/30/11
Desktop Service technicians need to touch every computer in order to switch the computer from Novell to Active Directory, add the Bradford network access control client and switch the port to the new network. Users can expect to be without their computers for 1 hour while these changes are being made. Individuals will be notified via email regarding their specific migration date. The changes will be made whether or not you are there. Laptops need to be made available to the technicians on the migration date. ITS will be visiting these departments the week of November 7th:
MAC Users: It is very important that we know what local administrative account you use prior to the migration e.g. "user" or a new account you created. By having this information beforehand we can ensure that the look and feel of your desktop and access to files stored on the hard drive are not affected by the migration. Please complete this form. Plans have been developed for standard Windows XP and Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6 and Linux operating systems. If you are running a desktop server function or require a publicly available IP address for off-campus users, notify the Helpdesk ASAP. Additional information about this project is available online. Departments will be notified approximately two weeks in advance of their migration date. Windows training and Macintosh training is available through the Technology Learning Center, Friends 101. All users are strongly encouraged to become familiar with these changes prior to your computer migration. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Sharon Beltaine at sbeltaine@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible. Quick guides are also available: General info sessions will be held in Job 312:

Why not just say "changes" instead of "mandatory changes?" What's with all the new authoritative language for doing small, banal, and routine things?!

The term "mandatory" was used more to capture attention than to assert
authority. In order for computers to continue to function over the new campus network, they will need to be converted to connect properly to it. For this reason, it is important that the campus community take note of communication about this effort. We're pleased to hear that you consider this migration effort "small, banal, and routine". Many people within ITS, in conjunction with outside consulting assistance, have worked countless hours over the past 18 months or so to plan, test, modify, and document the process so that it would appear "small, banal, and routine" and result in a minimal amount of inconvenience to those whose computers are being migrated. |
