Making Virtual Work "Work"

Contributed by Jennifer Wofford on 01/17/12

Ithaca College professional development facilitator Bill Piersol was published in the October 2011 issue of "Proven", a magazine that deals with performance, training, workforce, and development. "The Art and Practice of Virtual Work: First Things First in Engineering Desired Results" was co-authored by Piersol and students enrolled in Ithaca College's Online Professional Certificate Program.

The idea to write the article grew out of end of course discussions between Piersol and seminar students Cressida Barnaby, Laura Eiler, and Suzanne Greenberg.  Having participated in very rich discussions during the online seminar Making Virtual Work "Work", the group felt they could draw on their own considerable experiences with virtual work and develop a piece that would be of interest to others. The piece focuses on using an established framework to ensure important virtual work considerations are looked at in a sensibly ordered approach.

Ithaca College offers three-week online seminars and full online professional certificates in three fields: Strategic Communication Management, Performance Improvement Management, and Sustainability Leadership.
