Ithaca College has had a very successful programmatic partnership with Longview, a retirement community located on Danby Road, for the past 13 years. There are many opportunities for members of the Ithaca College Community to become involved at Longview, including:

  • Presentations at Longview:  There has been an ongoing, monthly faculty/staff speaker series at Longview since the beginning of the partnership in Spring 1999.  These presentations are informal and can be academic in nature, related to areas of personal interest, or involve poetry readings or music performances. An appreciative audience is guaranteed!  These monthly presentations generally take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Longview auditorium, though it is sometimes possible to schedule on other days and times.

A SPEAKER IS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1st TO REPLACE A CANCELLATION.   If anyone is interested, please let Chris Pogorzala know as soon as possible.

Speakers are also needed for March: (either 3/7 or 3/28), April: (4/4 or 4/18), and May: (5/2 or 5/23). Several residents have expressed an interest in a speaker on modern day feminism, but resident interests are wide ranging and any topic will be considered.

  • Course Related Projects at Longview: Faculty members can involve their students at Longview through course related, and/or service learning projects.  Intergenerational discussion groups, tours of Longview, recreational and social activities planned by students, and student presentations or performances held at Longview are all possibilities. Chris Pogorzala will work with faculty and students to identify options and to facilitate scheduling, promotion of programs, and recruitment of Longview participants.
  • Volunteer at Longview: Students, staff and faculty are always welcome to volunteer in any capacity at Longview. This might involve assisting in existing recreation programs, creating new ongoing activities, offering a ‘short course’ on a particular subject, providing theater or music performances, planning a social event or dance, or visiting individual residents.
  • Longview Quilt Group:  The Quilt Group at Longview is always looking for new members to teach and share skills with – staff, faculty or students.  No quilting/sewing skills are required. This group meets on Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Ithaca College classroom at Longview. Anyone who is interested should contact Chris Pogorzala prior to attending.

Longview/Ithaca College Shuttle

On days that classes are in session there is a shuttle that provides transportation between Longview and the College. It runs about every 15 minutes from approximately 8:40 a.m. to 1:00 on MWF, and from 9:05 to 12:30 p.m. on Tu/Th with regular stops at the Center for Health Sciences and Textor.  This shuttle is available to members of both the Longview and Ithaca College Communities.  Chris Pogorzala can provide copies (electronic or paper) of the shuttle schedule and it should be posted in the next few days on the Gerontology Institute web site (https://www.ithaca.edu/aging/longview/).

Contact for all of the above:  Christine Pogorzala, IC/LV Coordinator
