William Kappel, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at its Ithaca-based New York Water Science Center, will bring his expertise to the ENVS Spring 2012 seminar series on Monday 30 January at 4:00 PM in CNS 112.

His presentation will set the geologic stage for the presence of natural gas in the Marcellus Shale formation that underlies much of New York and Pennsylvania, introduce the mechanics of hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of natural gas, and discuss implications for surface- and groundwaters.
