Sustainability Case Competition Provides a Real World Problem...as well as a Cash Prize!Contributed by Paul Deamer on 01/27/12 The School of Business is hosting a campus-wide, team-based, funded Sustainability Case Competition this Spring, where one team can walk away with $5,000. The Dorothy D. and Roy H. Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise is housed in a LEED Platinum Building, where sustainability is emphasized throughout the curriculum. To further highlight business and sustainability, the School of Business is putting on this competition focused on a real organization with a business and sustainability issue. The not-for-profit Challenge organization came to the Business School with a business opportunity focused on recycling electronics, an issue of importance to the organization and also in the global marketplace. “We are partnering with Challenge organization on several project and we were delighted that they had a real decision to make that focused on sustainability issues, a key educational focus for us. This inaugural sustainability case competition will allow students to research, analyze, and think through a real world sustainability business issue which will influence the organization’s decision. We opened the competition up to students across the campus to work with our business students because we know students in other majors bring great strengths to this issue.” said Dean Mary Ellen Zuckerman. Student teams competing in this initiative will research, analyze and make recommendations to Challenge to help the organization make its business decision. Teams will work over a period of eight weeks, turning in written recommendations. The top five teams will then make oral presentations to a panel of judges. Open to juniors, seniors, MBA/MBA-PA students, and sophomores with special permission, teams can compete to win $5,000, $3,500, or $1,500. The competition is open to all Ithaca College students, but at least one member from each team must be a School of Business student. The overall goal is for students to learn about how sustainability issues impact the real world, locally and globally. Information sessions are coming up! Join us in BUS 111.
