Submitted on behalf of Tanya R. Saunders I am pleased to announce the recipients of the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 London Center Faculty Sabbatical Awards. Dr. Craig Duncan, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion (H&S), is slated to spend the Fall 2012 semester at the Ithaca College London Center. He will teach “Eccentrics, Explorers, and Reformers: The Victorian Intellectual Scene,” an interdisciplinary course he has designed especially for London Center students. This course on Victorian thought and culture will incorporate visits to complementary historical sites in London. In addition to interacting with London Center students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Duncan will pursue his own research on the “Darwinian challenge to dignity-based ethics.” Dr. Duncan reminded me that the first recipient of the London Sabbatical Award in 1998 was a philosopher, Dr. Stephen Schwartz. As the second Ithaca philosopher in London 14 years later, Dr. Duncan will contribute to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the London Center. Associate Professor Steve TenEyck, associate chair of the department of Theatre Arts (H&S), will spend the Spring 2013 semester in London. He will offer a course entitled “London’s Light: A History and Exploration of London’s Changing Light” and will assist in the development of internship opportunities appropriate to majors in Theatrical Production Arts. His own research will focus on how light affects culture and society. Associate Professor TenEyck worked with Associate Professor Jack Hrkach to assume responsibility for the annual faculty-led trip for students to the International Fringe Festival at Edinburgh; the trip has been offered continuously for the last eleven years!! I invite the Ithaca community to congratulate Craig Duncan and Steve TenEyck. |
