Jonathan Ablard, History, presented “Fruto del cuartel: Military Service and Masculinity in Argentina, 1901-1930” at Cornell University's Americas' Colloquium on February 2, 2012.

His paper examines the debate over obligatory military service in Argentina from 1901 through the 1930s. While the military claimed that military service was a required rite of passage to manhood and full citizenship, critics on the left argued that life in the barracks was emasculating and unmanly because soldiers were subjected to the arbitrary and "unnatural" authority of other men.

Dr. Ablard's work is part of an ongoing project on the social history of the Argentine military.
