LGBT Film Series Continues Wednesday February 22 with Screening Challenging Stereotypes About MasculinityContributed by Luca Maurer on 02/17/12
Straight Acting is a 2005 documentary by filmmaker Spencer Windes about his journey from closeted Mormon missionary into an openly gay athlete through his involvement in contact sports, including rugby, ice hockey and rodeo. Defying both gay culture and straight expectations, the film speaks volumes about the nature of the straight sports world and challenges stereotypes about masculinity and orientation. The theme for this year’s Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is “LGBT People and Sport.” The series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Education, Outreach, and Services, with support provided by the Jack Dembow Charitable Foundation. A documentary about rough contact sports — and the gay men that play them — will be the next offering in the Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series at Ithaca College. Straight Acting will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in Textor 103. It is free and open to the public.
