A documentary about mountain bike champion Michelle Dumaresq, the first transgender athlete on a national team, will be shown as part of the Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series. The screening of “100% Woman” will take place on Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in Textor 103. It is free and open to the public.

Canadian downhill mountain bike champion Michelle Dumaresq shook up the sports world — not for her considerable riding talent but for the fact that for the first 20 years of her life Michelle was Michael. “100% Woman” rides along with Michelle’s controversial foray into international women’s competition. Combining interviews, home movies and dynamic footage of some of the best mountain bikers in the world, the film shows her struggle to be accepted as both an athlete and a woman, and the protests she faced from other racers, some of whom she once considered friends.

The theme for this year’s Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is “LGBT People and Sport,” and the showing of “100% Woman” is being cosponsored by the women’s studies program. The series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, with support provided by the Jack Dembow Charitable Foundation.
