The lifetime achievements of John A. Krout, professor emeritus and retired founding director of the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute (ICGI), were recognized recently as the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) gave Professor Krout the 2012 Clark Tibbitts Award at AGHE’s 38th annual meeting in Arlington, Virginia. This award, named for an AGHE founder, is given by the association each year to an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of gerontology and geriatrics education.

Professor Krout retired in 2011 after more than 17 years as director of the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute. When he arrived in 1993, the institute was just a concept. Under his able leadership, the ICGI matured into a successful academic department with an interdisciplinary major and minor in aging studies. John Krout also spearheaded Ithaca College’s partnership with  Longview, a nearby retirement community, which created and still provides mutually beneficial learning opportunities for both Longview’s elder residents and IC students in various programs; this partnership has garnered national and international attention. And, with Professor Krout’s guidance, and that of his staff and faculty members over the years, the Gerontology Institute has grown into a regional “go-to” source known for professional continuing education through workshops, conferences, and distinguished speakers.

Kudos to John Krout for this latest recognition of his contributions to the fields of gerontology and education, especially here at Ithaca College.
