School of Music Dean Greg Woodward Named President of Carthage CollegeContributed by David Maley on 03/06/12
Currently dean of the School of Music, Woodward has also served Ithaca College as dean of graduate and professional studies and as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. In that role he was instrumental in guiding the development of IC 20/20, the college’s strategic vision for transforming the student learning experience over the next decade. “Ithaca’s loss is certainly Carthage’s gain,” said President Tom Rochon. “We will miss both his leadership and his fellowship, as Greg has served this institution and the community at large with distinction. We wish him all the best as he begins this new chapter in his professional career.” “I know I speak for the entire campus community in saying that we are grateful for the work that Greg did to provide the foundation for the successful launch of IC 20/20,” added Marisa Kelly, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Furthermore, Greg’s leadership of the School of Music has been outstanding.” Woodward joined the Department of Music Theory, History, and Composition as a composer in 1984 and has been a full professor since 2000. From 1985 to 2003 he was chair or cochair of graduate studies in music and director of summer programs in music, and from 1981 to 1983 he was director of music admissions and assistant to the dean. He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and has written works for orchestra, wind ensemble, band and chamber ensemble as well as jazz, popular and theater music. In 2003 he was named dean of the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies, where he led a period of growth that included the establishment of the college’s first doctoral degree as well as an expansion of the master’s degree programs. In 2008 he returned to the School of Music as dean, overseeing the development of new curricula in several fields of study. He served as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs for the 2010–11 academic year. “There is no way for me to express my gratitude and affection to all of my friends at Ithaca College for the wonderful 34 years I have spent here,” said Woodward. “Ithaca has given me so much and it has been a joy every step of the way to give back what I could.” The announcement from Carthage College on Woodward's appointment can be found here. This makes the third Ithaca College dean who has gone on to a college presidency since 2009. Dianne Lynch, dean of the Roy H. Park School of Communications, left to become president of Stephens College. School of Business dean Susan West Engelkemeyer left to serve as dean of the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and last year she was named president of Nichols College. In the next few weeks Provost Kelly will identify an interim dean to lead the School of Music next year while the search for a new dean takes place. The College owes a great debt of gratitude to Greg for his many years
and great variety of service he has provided, rightly noted by the President and Provost. But it will be the personal interactions with Greg, one of the warmest and kindest of individuals here, that will be missed most. All the best to you and Penny, Greg!
