Sustainability Café on April 2nd will look at the differences between mining and gas companiesContributed by Marian Brown on 04/02/12 The Sustainability Café on Monday, April 2nd will feature Dr. Devin Castendyk from SUNY Oneonta addressing the topic of “The Evolving Role of Community Consultation in Natural Resource Development.” Castendyk will offer a comparison between gold mining in New Zealand, oil sands mining in Canada, and natural gas development in New York. The Café will be held in Center for Natural Sciences Room 112 at 4:00PM. Devin Castendyk is an Associate Professor and Water Resources Program Coordinator at the State University of New York, College at Oneonta. He grew up in Massachusetts, received a BA in Geology from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, an MS in Geology from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from The University of Auckland in New Zealand. His research focuses on physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur within extreme lake systems. His specialty is lakes that develop within abandoned open pit mines, called “pit lakes,” and he has extensively studied the Martha Gold Mine in New Zealand as well as oil sands mining in Alberta, Canada. He also explores processes within extremely cold lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Dr. Castendyk has taught at SUNY Oneonta for the past seven years during which time the natural gas debate in New York has expanded from nothing to the heated explosions of today. He often ponders how things might have gone differently. This event is free and open to the public. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Marian Brown at 607-274-3787 or mbrown@ithaca.edu.
