Tuesday Salon: "It's Raining Again-- Damn Government!"Contributed by Mara Baldwin on 04/01/12 The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to be hosting "It's Raining Again-- Damn Government!": (Anti)Patriotism in Italian Language and Culture, a salon moderated by Marella Feltrin-Morris, assistant professor of Italian, taking place on Tuesday, April 3, at 4.00 p.m.. Following a presentation on her research, Marella Feltrin-Morris will moderate a conversation trying to answer these questions and more: "How do Italians speak/write/think about their country? The plethora of derogatory expressions commonly used in Italian media and in everyday conversation to denounce the status quo and the so-called "Italietta" (=petty, little Italy) of corruption and bad tv programs might be interpreted as a sign of anti-patriotism. And yet, what makes certain language patriotic or anti-patriotic? Is a critical perspective on one's country and its people inherently anti-patriotic, or could it be the sign of a more rooted patriotism, one that does not hesitate to expose the flaws of a painfully loved homeland?" The Tuesday Salon is a Handwerker Gallery program aimed at providing students, faculty, staff, and members of the community a forum outside of the classroom for intellectual discussion and debate. Topics are selected by our guest discussant, who provides a 10-minute introduction and moderates the ensuing conversation. All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Mara Baldwin at 607.274.7057. Please make requests for accommodations as far in advance as possible. |
