Anne Theobald, Assistant Professor of French, recently published an essay, “In Francion’s Shadow: ‘Ethos’-based Failure in Charles Sorel’s Polyandre,” in the spring volume of Papers on French Seventeenth Century Literature.

The essay compares the representation of the protagonists in two comic novels by Charles Sorel, an early-mid seventeenth-century French writer, in order to explain the popularity of one of the novels and the relative “failure” of the other.  It was developed into an article after a panel presentation on the notion of failure in seventeenth-century French literature at the 2011 Modern Language Association Convention.
