On Wednesday evening I received word that Mike Serventi, a long-term trustee who retired from the board in May 2011 and an alumnus of the class of 1972, was struck by a car and killed while riding his bicycle in Florida.

Mike was an incredibly warm and special person with an unwavering commitment to Ithaca College.  He was the driving force behind the vision and fund-raising for the Athletic and Events Center and through this work came to know many of the members of the College community including coaches, student affairs staff, members of the office of Institutional Advancement and our facilities staff to name just a few areas.  He particularly enjoyed his interactions with students when on campus for board events or planning for the A&E Center.  Mike was a friend and colleague, an inspirational leader, and a shining example of the highest levels of personal and professional achievements accomplished by an Ithaca College graduate.  He made an incredible impact on each and every person he touched.  We were privileged to have him as a member of our board and will always hold him in our hearts as "one of our own."

On behalf of the Ithaca College community I am extending my heartfelt sympathies to Mike's wife Gail '72 and his family.

Warmest Regards,
Tom Rochon
President

This is tremendously sad news. I had the privilege of serving with Mike on the Board and I doubt that there is anyone who loves and cares about Ithaca College more than he. He brought passion and energy to our discussions and was an instrumental figure in making the Athletics and Events Center a reality. But what really stood out to me was his warmth and humor. He had a spark and kindness that just radiated. I learned a great deal from serving with him and I can say with all truthfulness that I am a better person for having known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to all of our community who were touched by his presence in our lives.

This is a damn shame. Michael was a great guy and a real friend of Ithaca College. He always was interested in talking to faculty and students when he was here on campus. He will be missed.

I heard this sad news last week. Mike served as an IC trustee for many years during my term as president. He was an exemplary trustee in terms of his commitment and devotion to the college, and his hard work. Mike was also a joy to be around. The world has lost a wonderful man...Ithaca College has lost a dear friend.

This is a shocking tragedy. I met Mike on several occasions at IC events and interviewed him at least twice for ICView articles. Mike was a hardworking volunteer, totally devoted to his alma mater, and a real class act. My heart goes out to Mike's wife, Gail, and all their family at this terrible time.
