Patricia R. Zimmermann, professor of screen studies in the Roy H. Park School of Communications and codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, has published an essay entitled "Humanist and Poetic Activism: The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar in the 1950s."

The essay was published in the anthology Film Festivals and Activism, a new book edited by Diana Iordinova and Leshu Torchin and published by the University of St Andrews Press in Scotland.

Drawing on archival research and participant interviews, the essay situates the Flaherty seminar in the emerging international non-commercial media sectors developing post-World War II and also explores Frances Flaherty's theories of documentary filmmaking and how they formed the foundation for the seminar's operations.
