Ithaca College

For three days in May, this sunny music room in Berlin in the apartment of cellist Julian Arp and writer Johanna Arp served as the rendezvous point for Ithaca College Violin Professor Nicholas DiEugenio, pianist Mimi Solomon, and Hungarian pianist Ferenc Rados.

A faculty member of the Liszt Academy in Budapest for many years, Mr. Rados continues to coach professional musicians throughout Europe and as a guest at Prussia Cove in England. For twenty hours over three days, DiEugenio, Solomon, and Rados explored in great depth each movement of the three Brahms Sonatas for Violin and Piano. The heart of the discussion centered on Brahms’ use of musical notation; the way in which performers interpret notation within the context of “what the notes themselves want to do.” This past October, DiEugenio and Solomon also worked with Rados on a program of Enesco, Schumann, and Janacek, later performing the recital at La Loingtaine near Paris, France.
