Susan Monagan, Manager of Audience Development in the Department of Theatre Arts, traveled to the University of Birmingham, England in May to participate in an international research symposium “Creative practice, complexity and the creative economy”. Monagan presented her paper “Reflecting on Creative Economy Pedagogy” at the conference that focused on the connection between complexity theory and the creative economy. She received funding for her travel from the IC staff development fund.

Monagan has been conducting research on the creative economy, especially in rural Upstate New York, since 2003. “Creative economy” describes an attitude toward economic and community development that links economic vitality with artistic and creative activity.
