Clinical Professor Tina Caswell (SLPA) Earns Venture GrantContributed by Heather Hedges on 08/08/12 Tina Caswell, clinical instructor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology has been awarded a venture grant for her STRIDES equine therapy program from the United Way of Broome County. The $12,540 venture grant was awarded to Southern Tier Alternative Therapies (STAT) for the STRIDES program. This project will build on STAT’s existing equine therapy program for non-verbal and low-verbal youth between the ages of three and six, most with autism, by incorporating a communication/literacy development component utilizing Augmentative Alternative Communication. The goal of the STRIDES program is to increase social communication skills utilizing assistive technology (such as the iPad, with speech-generating software) in a motivating and recreational environment.
