Tracy Letts, author of “August: Osage County,” presents the story of Ken Carpenter, a middle-aged man from the middle of America who discovers he's lost his faith. Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, “Man from Nebraska” follows Ken on a journey away from home, during which he examines his faith and how people choose what they believe. “I’m a huge fan of Tracy Letts,” said director Wendy Dann. “He’s an actor and a writer, and his sense of language and staging is fierce, funny, and hits close to home. Letts is continually asking what it means to be ‘American.’ Each of his plays examines a part of our culture that’s disturbing him: greed, terror, faith, family. I find his plays go to the heart of the ‘problem of being an American’ and, for that reason, are terribly personal and moving.” While the text does focus on a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis, Dann has the utmost confidence in her cast’s ability to convey the story despite their age. “We knew that these roles would be a challenge for students: Ken Carpenter is in his late fifties when he faces his crisis of faith. But I knew from my experience directing “How I Learned to Drive” that the students were up for the challenge. Rather than using gray hairspray and drawn-on wrinkles, we decided to let the audience see the ensemble at the beginning and embrace that these young actors will take on a variety of roles throughout the course of the play.” The production is designed by Renny Cullen ’13 (scenic), Elysse Helms ’14 (costumes), Emilio Martinez Zurita de la Garza ’13 (lighting), and Department of Theatre arts faculty Don Tindall (sound). Hannah Goldstein ’13 is the stage manager, Kristen Joyce ’13 is the dramaturg, and Will Burns ’13 is the technical director. The assistant director is Jordan Reiff ’13. The cast of “Man from Nebraska” includes Cora Joe Anderson ’15, Emily Austin ’13, Nick Carroll ’14, Kelly Fairbrother ’15, Matt Greenberg ’15, Jasmine Harris ’15, Coleman Hemsath ’15, Pat Mazzella ’13, Maggie Moe ’13, Elise Myette ’14, Matt Ryan ’16, Jordan Silver ’16, and Maggie Thompson ’15.
