Reminder: Brazilian Poet Salgado Maranhão, Wednesday, October 3Contributed by Jennifer Jolly on 10/02/12 Please join Ithaca College's Latin American Studies program for the second event in the 2012-2013 Speakers Series: a reading and discussion by Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão. He will speak on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Williams 225. The translator of his works, Alexis Levitin, will accompany him. Salgado Maranhão is one of Brazil’s leading contemporary poets. His collected poems, The Color of the Word, won Brazil’s highest award, the Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de Letras, for the year 2011. An earlier collection, Mural of Winds, won the prestigious Prêmio Jabuti in 1999. In addition to eight books of poetry, including The Snake’s Fists, The Kiss of the Beast, and the recent Tiger’s Fur, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil’s leading jazz and pop musicians. His recent book of poems, Blood of the Sun, has just been released in English, with translations by Alexis Lavitin.
