SAFER (Students Active For Ending Rape) presents: Welcome to the PartyContributed by Gena Mangiaratti on 10/09/12 Each semester, SAFER holds an open discussion on gender stereotypes and what defines "rape culture" at a screening of "Welcome to the Party." Join us for this semester's screening tonight, October 9, at 7 pm in Textor 103. This event is free and open to the public."Welcome to the Party" is a rape awareness and prevention film directed and edited by Assistant Professor of Television and Radio Tom Nicholson. An open discussion led by an advocate from the Advocacy Center will follow the screening. Rape culture can be described as a society where rape is condoned through certain fundamental attitudes toward gender, sexuality, and violence. Many feminists and scholars argue that the United States is a rape culture, and that gender roles that set standards of how men and women should behave contribute to these attitudes. If you have any questions at all, feel free to e-mail us at SAFERithaca@gmail.com. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the SAFER e-board at SAFERithaca@gmail.com. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible. Students Active for Ending Rape is a pro-active organization on campus that strives to end rape, victim-blaming, and 'rape culture' through education and raising awareness. SAFER normally meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in Friends 209. We hope to see you there! To keep updated on SAFER, Like us on Facebook!
